Hanen Programs

Especially for parents with children with Autism.

More Than Words®

More Than Words® is a program developed by The Hanen Centre for parents of young children (under age five) with autism or social communication difficulties. A Hanen-certified speech-language pathologist leads the program, which is offered to a small group of parents.

The speech-language pathologist guides you every step of the way, helping you learn specific, research-based interaction strategies that you can use in your daily interactions with your child. All these strategies are drawn from research and have been shown to improve the social communication skills of children on the autism spectrum.

By learning in a small group with other parents, you get support and input from people who understand what you are going through. Not only do you walk away from the program armed with strategies that are proven to improve your child’s social communication skills, but you also gain a valuable support network of peers.

Raised in rural Manitoba, Jenn graduated from Minot State University in 2001 with a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Soon after, she started practicing speech-language pathology at the Society for Treatment of Autism in Calgary, where she worked until 2007. Jenn has since been serving as a Speech-Language Pathologist with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

 

Jenn specializes in treating children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and other complex communication disorders. She is Hanen-certified. Over the past ten years, she has taught two Hanen workshops — “More Than Words” and “It Takes Two to Talk” — to parents and caregivers on a regular basis.

 

Jenn has extensive experience in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). She has PODD training (Pragmatically Organized Dynamic Display) and has attended three international AAC conventions.

 

Jenn has served in a consulting role with families and schools across Saskatchewan, and brings considerable knowledge, energy, and enthusiasm to the Speech Therapy Saskatoon team. She believes that every child and adult has something to say and a right to be heard.
